Daro Montag, This Earth 1, Microbes, soil
“To be fair, I didn’t create this image – the microbes in my garden did. I simply sprinkled some soil on the surface of moist photographic film,” says artist Daro Montag.
“Under the right conditions a microbial community thrives, leaving its trace in the film’s coloured gelatin. I want my work to draw attention to the vital yet unseen community of organisms at work in healthy soil.
“While soil may seem unimportant to many people, it is essential to our survival on this planet. A healthy, living soil is essential for the growth of plants and the productiveness of crops. Without a few inches of good topsoil, our civilisation would crumble.
“In addition, healthy soil has an essential role in carbon storage. It has been estimated that soils around the world contain approximately 2000 billion tonnes of carbon in various forms at any one time. Making sure that the carbon stays there is a key method for mitigating climate change.”
